Debrief of my “Escape the sector” game project

Ok, this might not be of much interest to anyone other than me, but as I’ve been writing other stuff about my game here, it seems like a good place to put it. So I’ve spent a long time on Escape the sector, which is unfortunate because if you actually play it all the way through, 6 levels lasting 2 minutes it’ll only take you 12 minutes. I feel like the effort / play ratio is way off! 😛

Escape the Sector is now published for Android!

My Unity game Escape the Sector is available for Android, you can get it on the Google Play store here:

This one took me quite a while, you can see my development process here. Here’s some screenshots and a video:

While the world seems obsessed with Pokémon Go – I have created Fakémon!

Many people at the time of writing seem obsessed with the AR game Pokémon Go – where you have to walk around the real world to find monsters to catch.

My facebook and Twitter feed this week has been full of people telling me what creatures they’d caught, and I thought it’d be fun to invent my own silly Pokémon names, and post responses saying things like “Oh but have you caught a Spruedongle yet? I have!” and see if people wonder where I’m finding these super rare Pokemon that don’t exist in any guide.

Then I thought of creating a game using Textadventures.co.uk, which I’ve dabbled with before, to make something resembling the actual game – where the player ambles about and collects creatures. I know it’s pointless, but if you think about it, so is the real thing.

So Fakémon was born! Gotta collect them all, for no reason.

The best reviews of my BotSumo game

My game BotSumo that I made for Android has been on the Android Play store since January, and has been downloaded now over 12,000 times. Most of those people downloading were from the US, which was to be expected, but weirdly it found secondary audiences in Russia and Brazil, despite not being translated into their native languages.

Game progress – Escape the sector maps

So I’ve been creating maps! This game will be a race against time to reach the end of the level. And I wanted it to be set in space. Because space is cool, and spaceships are cool.

But, space is full of nothing, so what is the map made of?

I wanted it to be made of asteroids. The best spaceship sequences in Star Wars, Star Trek etc are when there’s asteroids, otherwise space is just big, empty and boring.

Game progress – Escape the sector

So I’ve been working on a game which I’m calling “Escape the sector”. Haven’t yet decided if it’ll be Android-only, or for desktop – but I’ve noticed you can export to WebGL, which means it’ll hopefully work embedded in a browser without much effort.

This started out as a project called “Escape Vector” which I’ve been writing about on IndieDB (see here). I created some 3D assets, rocks and buildings which I really liked the look of in 3DsMax because the lighting made it look really nice and lego-y, like this:
